CHAPTER 34

TWO RESOLUTIONS

David was surprised to find that they had indeed already arrived at Careo House. No sooner had his feet hit the ground, than Parker proceeded to ready the carriage steps for Miss Stratton to disembark, too.

David watched, filled with a disappointment he must now endeavour to hide as they returned to his aunt’s company.

“Pray, why did the halt seem more abrupt than usual, this time?” David asked the coachman, trying unsuccessfully to keep his frustration from leaking into his voice.

“Horse spooked, sir. Some little critter ran out in front of her just as we were winding up to the house...”

David didn’t hear the rest of the man’s explanation. All he could do was stare at Miss Stratton as she joined him on the curtilage, dipping her head shyly.

Silence surrounded them.

“Thank you,” David said, flustered, as he realised Parker had stopped talking and was eyeing him quizzically.

The coachman nodded and turned back to the carriage.

Grace looked at David, then the ground, and back again in rapid succession. “We must give your aunt the medicines she sent me to procure.”

“Yes,” he replied, stifling a groan. “We must.”

As they entered Careo House, the moment they had shared in the carriage seemed like an age ago. Almost like a dream.

Had it really occurred?

As David watched Grace remove her bonnet and shawl and hand them graciously to the waiting footman, he smiled.

It had occurred.

And, hopefully, it would not be long until another such opportunity presented itself.

One that he would seize, no matter what.
